Rules R&D

Post by Agamemnon »

As I'm putting stuff together for this release, it occurs to me that there are a lot of little random things that I could/should have rules written for somewhere but am:
A. Unsure exactly how to package said rules as a chapter.
B. Uncertain how fiddly I really want to get with it.

The only real umbrella I can think of that covers the thing would be something as vague as "Adventuring Shit." Though perhaps not using that exact title. Examples include:
  • Material tolerances for breaking down doors, etc.
  • Material tolerances for cutting through chains
  • Reqs for trying to escape various kinds of binding (read: arms tied behind your back)
  • Fall damage by distance
  • Reqs for lifting shit by general weight category
It's a whole lot of relatively fiddly minutiae that nonetheless comes up disproportionately often in adventure fiction and gaming.

Any ideas on other similar niche topics that should go into such a chapter?

Maybe this would be best suited for an appendix? I could imagine some kind of miscellaneous table section, which might also include copies of some tables in the wealth section, like the list of example wealth reqs (Table 20, page 96).

Could well be an appendix situation. Or it might just be a chapter in Book IV called "Dramatic Situations" or something that includes a whole bunch of specific applications of ability checks. It would largely depend on if any of the above rules end up needing text accompaniment, or if it is enough to just stick a chart somewhere. I'm not married to either approach just yet.

Adventure and Drama (Exciting and often deadly minutae)

This Chapter could group all kinds of adventurous shit as you put it, like overland travel rules (and charts - we love them charts with mods), all kinds of damage like, poison and disease (mechanics and "damage"), cold, fall, hazards like trap mechanics, light condition, survivability conditions (thirst and hungry parameters), etc...

Off the top of my head:
  • Disease
  • Holding ones breath & Drowning
  • Exertion & Fatigue
  • Cold, Fire, Lightning damage
  • Poison
  • Visibility ranges
