Gregor Haaner

Post by EinBein »

Gregor Haaner is a man of unremarkable size and brawny stature. He wears heavily slashed green and white Landsknecht clothing, covered by a tabbard with the Duchy of Mirandola crest emblazoned over the heart. Gregor's most remarkable piece of equipment is a huge flame-bladed sword that he wears over his shoulder when he is on guard duty. Otherwise, he carries just a dagger. Gregor's gaze is calm, if not stoic. He speaks with a slow deep voice and heavy German accent (including rolling the r with the back of his tongue). He tends to fall to dismal moods, when not occupied.

Gregor is of low birth, third son of a thatcher in southern Germany. Under the reign of his extremely dominant and violent father he learned to question catholic practises, as his father regularly bought absolution after severe beatings of family members (which finally lead to the death of Gregor's mother). Gregor fled home by joining the Lansknechts at the age of fifteen, and fought in many battles, mainly in the service of Charles V. Starting as low Knecht, he became Doppelsöldner eventually. During his later campaigns, he repeatedly refused to listen to the preachings of his catholic Fähnlein's Kaplan Gottfried, because he had found Martin Luther's ideas of God's mercy more appealing. This lead to open dispute between the two and finally, one of these disputes turned lethal: In a heated debate, Gottfried slapped Gregor, who answered with choking Gottfried to death.

He deserted immediately, being chased by the military policeforce (Weibel) of the Schultheiss Gotthard (being responsible for justice in the regiment and - to make things worse - the cousin of the late kaplan). Only by entering enemy territory at Mirandola, he was able to evade his pursuers. After living off his meagre savings for a few days, he needed to find a new payed employment. But after being chased away as potential German spy, only a certain member of the noble Pico family welcomed him as a new household guard and servant.

Haha, trying to make friends by bringing up all of their countrymen you killed. Brilliant.
Take an SA form "Seeking friends" and/or Outsider.

EinBein wrote:When re-modelling Gregor, I had the following observations/questions:

1. When I had skills priority 3 before, now 2 or even 1 suffices, even when I adjust the values to the new scale. I took 2 in order to push some skills further. This seems due to the fact, that some skills aren't available anymore (Steel and Athletics were two of Gregor's highest skills). Any plans what Steel is now? Gregor had a very low Willpower, but high Steel (battle). I took again a low Willpower, and hope to be allowed to tap his background trait "German Landsknecht" in battle situations...

2. Attributes remain quite low even with Priority 4. Intended?

3. No Outsider trait. I boosted his background trait "German Landsknecht" to 3d and would use it equivalent to Outsider in the context of the post-Italian Wars Italy. Does that work as intended?

4. No Blood Debt as "bad Patron" anymore. I took d2 Patron for Giovanni Pico. Any plans to add something like "-1 pt the Patron has power over the character due to some kind of blood debt"?

5. No Asset to buy the Flamberge again. Maybe 33 grants it as part of the Patronage, but officially it just offers "bare minimum tools to perform their duties".

I'll upload him tomorrow.
1. You could get something like Steel with a Character Trait. Eg Hardened.
You probably won't be able to tap German Landsknecht into EVERY battle situation, but you for sure will if your looking at Landsknecht tactics or something.

2. Probably, I haven't looked very closely at it yet.

3. Yes, that will work well.

4. You could also take Giovanni as a Relationship, but it would probably be expensive.

5. Well can wait and see what the money system is like. You will probably be able to afford it, I think.

VERY expensive even with the downsides built in. At least:

2 pt Character has some significant amount of power or influence in the setting. Merchant magnate,
captain of a large mercenary army, head of a significant noble house.
+2 pt Character is of a social status significantly above the PC’s (a commoner vs. a noble).
-1 pt Character is owed a great personal debt by or they have significant leverage over the PC.
-1 pt Character is unreliable, significantly flawed, or possessed of a major achilles heel. (representing the double-edgedness of Gregor's feelings towards Giovanni's practices)
+2 pt Relationship is... 2 die. They’ll try to help you as best they can, as long as it doesn’t pose a direct
danger to them.
4 pt sum

Compared to 2 pt 2d Patron without downsides.

Like I said, you don't have to perfectly emulate your previous character.

You just have to hit enough of the broad strokes for it to still feel like Gregor.

With the game now revolving around Ferran, Gasparo and Gregor you might even be able to convince the others to invest in a Mirandola faction...

True. I also had a similar thought. If both of you are up to it, why not? :)

Nice. :D

Just a request. Can you re-link image from a secure (https compatible) page? Imgur does the trick.

Do I need to sign in at imgur? Tried it without, but none of the links created worked on these forums?

Thanks, changed it once more and included the second page. Please note that I just changed the attributes / proficiencies tier in this last upload. I increased attributes to 5 (Agility +2 to 7 and Cunning +1 to 5) and decreased proficiencies to 4 (no polearms and firearms and brawling on 9).

The "fencing master" was maybe a bit over the top from a lore point-of-view. "Hardened veteran" in longswords fits it a bit more, while Agility 7 seems not too exaggerated for a professional fighter.

Turns out we're an Agile group (Ferran is also A7 C5). Now if Ag had A7 (he's at 4) too we could make a successful acrobat troupe after we murder that necromancer.

There is a "Foreign-Born" Trait in there. Also there's the "Wanted for High Treason", easily renamed to "Wanted for Murder". Maybe its preferable that taking a 3d BG. Just kicking around ideas. :)

:D Just can't think of Gregor as a excessively strong guy. So he needs something to fight with instead... Even though Brawn 7 also has its merits...

Good ideas! I still like the German Landsknecht as substitute of Outsider, but reduced it to 2d in favor of "0d Wanted for priest-murder by Holy Roman Empire". This gives the second NPC on my list a reason to be there again...

Edit: revised the sheet above accordingly.
