List of characters who got crippled during a story?
So, here's a challenge.
Please list fictional characters that got crippled during a story and kept pushing on...
Getting replacements like Bucky Rogers and Luke Skywalker won't count. Regeneration (Corwin of Amber) won't count. Game of Thrones doesn't count either.
It's almost 3AM, so, all I can think of is Guts. And Herr Starr, but he's an antagonist.

Re: List of characters who got crippled during a story?
There are a plethora of characters who begin the story crippled in some way. Moby Dick, Captain Hook, Sand dan Glokta, “Mad-Eye” Moody, Quasimodo... the list could go on forever. If it happens to a protagonist during the story though, it is usually swiftly followed by death or some kind of fix. People just don't like watching people get crippled in media.
If you include Game of Thrones, there is Bran, Jamie and Donal Noye who actually become crippled during the series and carry on.
Outside Game of Thrones I can only think of:
Professor X (The X-Men)
This is kind of a cop out since he starts the series in a wheelchair and we only see him in later movies walking again in prequels
Lieutenant Dan (Forrest Gump)
I don't know how much this would qualify for "pushing on" though. He is a minor character and even tries to kill himself.

John Silver in Black Sails but I don't know if it counts as he is already a cripple in the original story.

From the Wheel of Time, Rand Al'Thor loses a hand, and Mat Cauthon loses an eye. Rand reacts quite realistically to it - which makes sense given that Robert Jordan fought in Vietnam - and only really comes to terms with the loss when he and his stepdad spend some time sparring a couple of books (probably about a month or two) later. As for Mat, well, Robert Jordan was dead by that point, and Brandon Sanderson seemed to not have Mat react at all to the loss (beyond the screams of pain as it was happening, at least). Given that this is a series where characters deal with all sorts of mental conditions that aren't named but are described very well (including PTSD and, I suspect, high functioning autism), this isn't that much of a surprise.

Add Hodor and Patchface. Both for being brain damaged. But both as a character concept from the beginning.thirtythr33 wrote:If you include Game of Thrones, there is Bran, Jamie and Donal Noye who actually become crippled during the series and carry on.
Ivar / Yngvar from the computer / mobile game The Banner Saga loses an arm towards the end of the first game and carries on.
Frodo in The Lord of the Rings loses a finger and carries on Otherwise, there are very few cripples in Middle Earth...
And the crown goes to: Guts from the Anime / Manga Berserk.... but he gets a mechanical replacement later...

1. Gotrek Gurnisson from the Warhammer Fantasy Gotrek & Felix novels. He looses an eye in the first book, he suffers amnesia from a heavy concussion later on, and fights against extreme odds but never stops.
2. Salvatore's Wulfgar. He dies, goes to hell (or whatever), gets severely tortured by the demon Ertruu, gets revived, but the whole ordeal breaks his mind. Yet he pushes on.
3. Philoctetes from ancient greek mythology. Philoctetes was the guy that lit Hercules' pyre after the demigod wore the cloak soaked in Nessus' blood. In gratitude Hercules gave to Philoctetes his bow and hydra-blood poisoned arrows. Philoctetes was already a great archer, armed with this legendary bow he was regarded the best mortal archer.
When the Greeks went to siege Troy Philoctetes was bitten by a snake in the leg when the fleet stopped at the island of Lemnos and his wound festered. For that reason the other kings exiled him, leaving him stranded on the island. Ten years later the Acheans receive an oracle that one of the conditions of winning the war was to recover the arms of Hercules. Some of them sail back to Lemnos to retrieve the bow, and are surprised to find Philoctetes alive, his foot deformed and festering, and bitter for his exile. In the end he is persuaded to join them and goes to the war, killing three Trojan heroes there.
4. Jodorowsky's Othon von Salza (and the rest of the metabarons). Even if they all do get prosthetics. It's the act of sacrifice every metabaron makes that makes it so epic.
I believe its the fact that he does it to himself during the fight and continues the assault that makes it so freaking epic.

I LOVE Berserk. But Guts gets a replacement (or should I say improvement), doesn't he?higgins wrote:all I can think of is Guts

Krijates Xinemus from the Prince of Nothing trilogy by R Scott Bakker becomes blinded. He reacts... poorly to this.
