I just bought this film based on this thread. It will take some time before I can see it, though.

I have to admit that I have never seen that movie personally even though I like Mads Mikkelsen as an actor (you have to see Adam's Apples, even though it has nothing to do with this thread).

I'm not sure how far novella and film strip off the historic source of the original Hans Kohlhase. Especially as the novella has taken artistic freedom from the real happenings and the film is based on the novella and not on the happenings themselves.

And Heinrich von Kleist wrote his story in the 18th century during Napoleons quasi-rule in Germany to express his rebellious mindset without getting into danger because of agitation.

But the real storie's end is a bit lame. When Hans really began to be a nuisance, he was caught and killed. And that's it. No more drama. So maybe the fiction is even better?

Oh, I do as well. He was great in Casino Royale. I especially love the Straight Flush Edition, which is far better than the original.

Well, same can be said about William Wallace, Bonnie & Clyde, Spartacus, etc. Their stories weren't less captivating despite their tragic ending. In fact one could argue that it is because of these endings that the stories have endured.
