Those who know Karl know him as a friendly fellow. He was a soldier until his return last year, although he doesn't really talk about his time on campaign and so no one really knows what he did there. He's taken up farming now and although his returns have been modest so far, he has taken to it with aplomb. He will greet passersby pleasantly, and stop to chat briefly, but come dusk he races home to his wife and baby son. It's clear they are his world.
He did get into an verbal altercation with Gunther, a local peddler, recently, but to be fair to Karl, he was protecting the honour of a couple of local peasant women that the rat was harassing. Right, too, of Gunther to back down, Karl could surely have sorted him out if given cause, being the burly fellow that he is. Good of Karl to give the rat a chance to apologise to the girls.
