I reckon he's going to cut along some of those lines, do a bit of folding and stitching and end up with a "thing". I'm sure it will be have been obvious, when we know.

Yup. I actually considered turning the leather over for the riddle, but left the markings on the top side as a hint. And as it often is the case, the scale can be deceiving.

I had guessed it would become a piece of barbarian underwear, but with the lines on it I think it will be the beginning of a leather armor for the torso

Nono, you misread my comment. It's for torso as EinBein quite correctly suggested. It will not be "leather armor" though -- there's more stuff to come, making it a whole different type of armor. If that makes sense.
