I think you need something else. Something seems a bit off in here...

But can you guess what that thing is/was/still is?

Upper arm protection? the piece of metal on its left used to strap it to a gorget?

Close in principle, but no cigar.

Archery armguard (whatever it is correctly called)?

Nope.

It seems like there are places to connect something in the left and right side of that mystery thing. That made me think that it might be some sort of thing where you suspend the backplate but it looks too odd for that.
Something tells me that what you are showing us is actually something that goes "inside". So, if it is piece of armor, it is something that goes towards the person and so on. Correct?

Completely visible from outside when worn.

Id guess it is a cuisse. Can't tell if it's left or right from this angle.
At the bottom of the picture are the straps that do up at the back of the leg. At the right looks like some really weird arming points where it attaches to the lendener. On the left the brigandine splints have been exposed (possibly from rubbing on the poleyn its tucked behind).
Otherwise higgins owns some kind of kinky corset.

Yes! Correct!
Uhm... The cuisse, I mean.
You guys have seen them actually:
I'm sure they've been on other pics as well.
Added one more image I think you haven't seen, although they're only partially visible here:
It doesn't take much to completely bend narrow splints of mild steel in a full contact fight.

Yeah, it has taken quite a bit of punishment, it seems
I have to remember this when PCs come to town after some fighting and ask them if they want to get their armor mended

Better the armor than the leg
