Reading List

I've just finished The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. It's been my guilty pleasure for much of this year. Now I need new novels to read between my usual bouts of writing and research. I'm tempted to start reading The Witcher books again or maybe The First Law series, but I'd like to find new fantasy.

Any good, dark, and bloody fantasy recommendations out there?

Red Knight by Miles Cameron. It's about a mercenary company hired to protect a covenant.

The Barrow by Mark Smylie. This is set in the same world as Artesia comics. Lots of seedy characters and quite a bit of sex, I could really well see this as an HBO production :)

Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan. First book of Powder Mage series. Quite epic one that feature muskets.

If you haven't read The Lies of Locke Lamora yet, you should give it a try. The series is called The Gentlemen Bastards. Great fantasy heist story with many betrayals and lots of creative swearing.

You could also try R. Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing. Good--check. Dark--check. Bloody--check. His books aren't for everyone, though. The prose leans towards the dense and poetic, and the names are long and sometimes hard to pronounce.

Smells kind of like this.
