[Act 1] [Scene 1] [Introduction]
[Venice 1527]
The reflection of the full moon dances across the canals of Venice. The late Spring air is crisp and cool; giving the impression of a peaceful night... but looks can be deceiving. Across the lagoon the Republic of Venice and her allies are under threat. Charles V presses his advantage in Italy, making his way towards Rome.
When the messenger boy awoke you after midnight to summon you to see Claudio Acerbi in his chambers, you expected the worst. Claudio's health has been failing him; leaving him bed ridden the last couple of weeks. The messenger reassured you that the old man yet lived, but would not elaborate on the reason for the summons at such a late hour.
Now four men, Giorgio D'agnolo, Marco Acerbi, Cirillo Bondesan and Karl Friedson stand anxiously in the antechamber outside Claudio's bedroom waiting to be allowed in. Even in his weakened state Claudio was a proud and dignified man. His insistence on being regally dressed, even to see a family member, was no doubtless the reason for the delay. A lantern sits on the small table next to a fruit bowl, throwing warped shadows around the room. Portraits of the Acerbi family decorate the walls and hold the expression of disdainful judgement.
A loud CLICK from the latch on the double doors to Claudio's bedchamber breaks the silence of the room. The doors creak open and Giacomo Acerbi steps out, moving slowly and quietly, shutting the doors behind him. When he turns to face the group of you he has a concerned expression. His mouth opens for a moment as if he were going to say something and then thought better of it.
[Giacomo Acerbi]

What I wouldn't give to be home with my wife I think to myself. The lack of sleep and anxiety at my employers health makes an uncomfortable combination. I look tersely at Giacomo, unwilling to speak first.

I (Cirillo) smile reassuringly to all around. Based on the condition Giacomo I assume that his health has been deteriorating and take a step forward asking "Is there I can help you with, sir?" ending the step to a slight bow.

Re: The Floating City [Scene 1]
Marco was looking really bad.
He was sleepy and tired. And his clothes, while flamboyant, were in mess. He was dressing in hurry... Not that he was paying much attention to his wardrobe in everyday life, anyway. Now it was just even worse.
He was standing in the antechamber and it looked like he didn't even fully realize, what is going on. Mixed feelings could be read from his face: anger when looking at his brother, and fear and curiosity. For a second he was looking like he wanted to ask Giacomo something, but Cirillo was faster and Marco was left with open mouth.

Re: The Floating City [Scene 1]
Giacomo's eyes snap to Cirillo, evaluating him like a hawk does a mouse. "No doctor. For once you weren't called concerning my father's health but for someone else's. I did notice however, that your latest rounds of treatment haven't been having much effect. I will be sending a messenger to Florence for Lucio Monte on the morrow. He always knew how to take care of my father. In the meantime, I suppose you will have to do." Giacomo gives a grand sweeping gesture to the group of you. "Father will see you now." The tone of his voice indicated that he wasn't going to elaborate. With a curt nod toward his brother Marco, he turns on his heel and exists the antechamber.
When the four of you enter the bedchamber you find Claudio Acerbi slumped wearily in his large study chair. He had his favorite chair moved into this room after he had begun to lose his breath making the walk to his study. He is impeccably dressed as was usual for him. "Come closer." He wheezes softly. "Don't make an old man raise his voice."

Marco stepped forward and kneeled before his father, clearly moved. "What is going on, papa?" he asked. "How are you felling? You should really rest now, not work... Giacomo didn't tell, why you summoned us so late."

Cirillo feels tension in his stomach from the words of Giacomo and gives a brief but stony gaze of a man who has seen too much pain, suffering and bloodshed. After that he just he just gives a short reply "Very well, sir.".
Cirillo follows Marco to his father's room and waits for what the old man has to say while thinking what he could do better to help Claudio's condition.

Re: The Floating City [Scene 1]
Claudio pats his son on the shoulder and gives a soft smile. "I'm feeling the same as I have all month. Dreadful. And your right, I really should be resting instead of working. Heaven knows how the doctor pesters me." He gives Cirillo a defiant glace and begins to chuckle before bursting into a ragged cough.
After his coughing spell ends he continues. "In a round about way, that's why I sent for you tonight. I've asked Giacomo to handle the resupply agreements to Cervia and Ravenna. Charles is making a break for Rome and Andrea Gritti wants to retake as much ground behind him as possible while we can." He realize he has been taking about politics and stops himself. "You always were the one with the kind heart, Marco. You know the cook Francesca, don't you?" He gives an exasperated sigh. "Poor thing. Someone attacked her tonight, on her way back home. Shes downstairs recovering. Thankfully she wasn't too badly hurt but... she wasn't robbed of her coin." He gives an uncomfortable look to each of you in turn to make sure you understood what went unsaid.
He clears his throat and continues. "Usually it would be her family's duty to champion her cause... but her father is dead and her brother is fighting with the French. Marco, I'd like you to take charge of helping her. See to it that justice is found." He looks to each of the other three of you in turn. "Giorgio and Karl. You are to discontinue you usual duties and to instead assist Marco in this endeavor in any way he needs. Doctor, I imagine Francesca will be in need of your services as well."
[OOC: Cervia and Ravenna are coastal cities in Italy, between Venice and Rome. Andrea Gritti is the Doge (Duke) of Venice.]

"Umm... I am to take the charge? I don't know, if I can... I mean, yes papa, I will do this! You will see the justice found, as you wish!" - Marco smiled and his initial hesitation was gone, now he was happy and proud he has a chance to help his father. He looked at his companions. Being in charge was a tricky part for him and he hoped they'll know, what to do now.

Claudio continues. "If this doesn't prove too troublesome for you Marco, when all this is done I would like for you to show a greater interest in the families business affairs. I know the topic doesn't hold much interest for you, but it is well past the time I should have starting handing over the reigns. It's not pleasant to talk about, but I feel I don't have long left in this world. When I'm gone... Well... your brother has a head for business, but doesn't have a heart as compassionate as you. I would die a happy man if I knew the two of you could put aside your differences and work together."

"Yes, sir! I will definitely take a look at the poor Francesca.". Cirillo wonders where he can find her but doesn't want to bother asking the old man about that. There are bound to be other servants who can help about that.
Then I look at Marco questioningly and wait for further instructions before looking for Francesca.

Re: The Floating City [Scene 1]
"I am glad to assist Marco in this delicate affair. We will do our best to keep this quiet and find the guilty party."
Rape is one of the most cowardly thing one can do! We will punish whoever is responsible...
My mind is already racing. Once we conclude this meeting, someone will have to take care of Francesca and gather whatever information we can from her. But I also think one person should quickly go at the "scene of the crime" and look for eyewitnesses.

"Yes, father. I'll do as you wish. Now you should rest, I'll help you to get to bed. And than we'll take care of everything."
It wasn't very convincing from Marco, but he tried. After assisting his father he headed to exit the room and downstairs, to find Francesca. On his way he asked Cirillo quietly:
"Why are we helping her, actually? If she wasn't robbed and she's not hurt, what are we all needed for?"
Apparently, Marco was the one who didn't understand, what went unsaid...
